Join us for a full day of workshops presented by contributors to the new doula anthology Round the Circle. Full day registration will include a free copy of the book! Tara Campbell will be presenting on gentle cesareans from 11- 12:30, Kristen Avonti will lead us in a hands on workshop making postpartum herbal preparations from 1:30-5:30, and from 9:15-10:45 Jenny Everett King will teach us about the needs of NICU families.Three CAPPA continuing education units for the morning sessions included.

UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS OF NICU FAMILIES, 9:15-10:45, 1.5 CEUs Develop a deeper knowledge of effective ways to support families who find themselves in special needs situations, and learn how to address the complicated emotions that may accompany a NICU stay. Understand the details of prematurity, including lactation support when baby is unable to breastfeed, and the benefits of skin-to-skin care for preemies. We will also discuss options for preventing preterm birth and the unique needs of mothers who find themselves putting extra effort into carrying to term. GENTLE CESAREANS, 11-12:30, 1.5 CEUs Learn how to incorporate the “family centered cesarean birth” concept into practice, and adapt the labor support role in the operating room. WellPregnancy guest instructor Tara Campbell, DONA Doula Trainer, Lamaze Childbirth Education Trainer, and the founder of Birthing Gently, specializes in working with maternal and fetal high-risk OB patients who are having elective cesarean sections. She has provided support at over 150 cesareans.
BOOK SIGNING AND NETWORKING DURING LUNCH BREAK, 12:30-1:30
HANDS ON POSTPARTUM HERBAL PREP, 1:30-5:30, Understand more about the many ways in which herbal preparations can support a woman during her postpartum transition. We’ll focus primarily on the use of nourishing tonic herbs and preparations intended to provide supportive or comfort care. This workshop includes a hands on medicine making component and herbal preparations for students to take home. WellPregnancy guest instructor Kristen Avonti is an educator, healer, herbalist, midwifery assistant and mother of four. Her deep passion for healing and sharing her healing wisdom drives both her clinical practice and the educational center she runs.
Tuition for the full day is $100, plus $15 materials fee for the herbal preparations workshop, when you register by March 31, and $115, plus materials fee after March 31, if space is available. Morning workshops only are $50 before March 31, and $60 afterwards. Herbal workshop only is $55, plus $15 materials fee before March 31, and $65 plus $15 materials fee after March 31. Tuition includes CAPPA continuing education units for the morning sessions.

MEDIA IMAGES OF BIRTH AND THEIR EFFECTS ON LABORING WOMEN, 9:30-10:45: Veteran childbirth educator and doula Vicki Elson will screen her hilarious, eye opening film, Laboring Under an Illusion, answer questions and lead a discussion on media images of laboring women.
THE BENEFITS OF ACUPUNCTURE FOR LABORING WOMEN, 11-1: Amy Majer MS, Lic. Ac., Dipl. O.M. (NCCAOM) has been using acupuncture on laboring women since 1987. We want women to get support in the end of their pregnancy to support their cervix to soften, ripen and open. Let’s look at how acupuncture and acupressure can be used as tools to support your clients to both soften and ripen their cervices for labor, and help align baby for effective pressure on mom’s cervix. We will cover the basics of Chinese Medical Diagnostics, and go over the 30 day traditional Lying In period, what is done and why according to the tenets of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We will also cover Mother Roasting and postpartum moxa if time allows.
